For many people, Christmas is the most eagerly awaited time of the year: rest, treats, loved ones, atmosphere – and often a break from routine. When it comes to exercise, the question may arise: do I have to train now, or can I just take it easy?
The good news is that you can – and should – take it easy on vacation. But at the same time, it's good to remember that completely forgetting about exercise isn't always good for your stamina or physical well-being. When you stick to at least some of your routines, you will feel more energetic, your mind will be more balanced, and returning to everyday life will be easier.
A break won't ruin your bottom line – but a little maintenance goes a long way
A common concern is that the Christmas break will ruin everything that has been built up during the fall. However, this is not the case. A well-built training foundation can withstand a couple of weeks' break. Muscles do not disappear in a couple of days, and your basic fitness will not collapse in an instant.
But we also know this: when exercise falls by the wayside, other choices can start to slip too—eating, sleeping, and overall alertness. Even a little exercise can act as an anchor, helping you make other smart choices as well.
Work out from home – easily and with guidance
In the midst of the Christmas rush, going to the gym can seem overwhelming. This is where online workouts are an excellent alternative:
- You can do them whenever it suits you.
- Workouts can be kept short and effective
- No need to think about the program – guidance and rhythm are included
- You can exercise in your living room, even without equipment.
A 10–30 minute home workout a few days a week is enough to maintain your routine and stay fit – while also leaving room for celebrations and rest.
Find balance – exercise, rest, and Christmas treats can coexist
At Christmas, there is no need to "perform well-being." But exercise can be restful when done in tune with your body and mind. It can be a walk in the woods, an online yoga class, a short muscle training circuit, or outdoor activities with the family.
Small, planned moments for your own well-being are a way to take care of yourself even in the middle of the holiday season.
Tips for maintaining your routine during the Christmas season
- Plan ahead – set aside some time in your calendar for light exercise
- Keep your goals realistic – 2 x 20 min is better than 0 x 60 min
- Take advantage of online training – save time and effort
- Make your workout enjoyable – play music or exercise with others
- Be kind to yourself – Christmas doesn't have to be the most intense training period
Stick to your routine – flexibly, gently, and in your own way. Exercise is a gift you give yourself – even at Christmas.
