5+3 tips for building a workout routine

The New Year and New Year's resolutions are here again. If you promised to start going to the gym or exercising regularly, this blog is for you. Exercising doesn't just become regular overnight, it requires building a routine. Here are tips to help you create a workout routine and keep your workouts regular.

Get your base in shape - five tips

A workout routine does not happen without groundwork and planning. It's worth building a solid foundation to keep your routine going for as long as possible. Start laying the groundwork for your workout routine with these:

1. Set a goal
Do you want to improve your fitness, lose weight or perhaps aim for a more specific result. Write down your goal so it sticks in your mind.

2. Create a schedule, or training plan
Write down how many days a week you will train and how. You can use the Syke Tribe training app to help you find different training programmes to suit your goals. The training programme packages include a gym programme, nutrition guidance and a 30-day training plan. Read more and check out the Syke Tribe app here.

3. Translate the plan into your everyday life
Next, mark your workouts on your calendar or plan out the days you will work out. Keep track of your entries. If you cancel your workouts because of other commitments, it will take longer for a routine to form or the routine may not form at all.

4. Make it easier to get to training
Make sure your training equipment, such as clothes, water bottle, shoes and other necessary equipment, is in good condition and suitable. Pack your gym bag ready and move it to the hallway to wait. This will ensure that you can take the bag with you and make it easier to get to the training session.

5. Publicise your plan
Tell others, such as friends, your spouse or personal trainer, about your goal and your training plans. This will give you the motivation to stick to your goal.

Start building a routine - the three most important things

Once you've got the basics in place and a training plan in place, you can start building the routine itself. Train according to your plan and keep your goal in mind. In just a month, you'll start to notice how much easier it becomes to start exercising. Keep up the regularity of your workouts with these:

1. Keep your wits about you
Don't get carried away with training too much at the start, lest you get too sore and have to stop immediately. You can think ahead about your own pitfalls that could break the regularity of your workouts or kill your motivation to exercise. Once you know what the obstacles are, you can be better prepared for them. But if you do fall into a pitfall, look back, learn from your mistakes and pick up where you left off.

2. Check the box - a wonderful feeling
You can use a traditional calendar or apps such as Syke Tribe or a sports watch to help you find your routine. They make it easy to record your workouts and results. By writing down your workouts, you can better see how hard you've worked to achieve your goals and get into a routine.

3. Get the help of a personal trainer
With a personal trainer, you can go through your goals and plans. If necessary, your personal trainer will draw up a more detailed training programme to suit your goals and go through the movements with you in the gym. If you wish, you can also work out with a personal trainer. If you're interested in coaching, book an appointment for a free exercise consultation with your centre's customer service and you'll be able to talk to your personal trainer.

Maintain a routine

Once you've established a workout routine, it's time to start maintaining it. Stumbling blocks can still come your way, so don't sigh just yet. It takes about a couple of months to establish a training routine. Patience will be rewarded eventually.

By the time you've been able to keep up your regular exercise routine for two months, it's likely to be part of your life and your daily routine. You may have a break in your routine in the future, for example during the summer holidays, but after that it will be easier to get back into a routine and exercise regularly. If your routine breaks for a long period of time, you can always go back to the beginning and start creating a new routine.
